Barely ten days into May, the Missouri River is already pulsing with an energy that feels more like mid-June. According to the team at Wolf Creek Angler, the local scene is currently a study in extremes, oscillating between “peaceful morning cast” and “Grand Central Station at rush hour.”
The good news is that for those who favor nymphing, the fishing remains solid river-wide. For the dry-fly enthusiasts, the opportunities are localized but promising:
- BWOs: The hatches are waning but still present.
- Midges: Staying steady as the reliable standby.
- Caddis: Currently booming, particularly in the canyon stretch.
- March Browns: Making guest appearances to keep things interesting.
The Streamer Situation: Even for the most devoted streamer fanatics at the shop, the current season has been a resounding “Meh.” While a few aggressive Browns are giving chase and some quality fish have been landed, it hasn’t quite reached the heights of legendary spring seasons past.
