Join a Bear Aware Meeting in Fort Belknap

Grizzly bears are expanding their range eastward, prompting a community Bear Aware Meeting hosted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and Fort Belknap Fish and Wildlife. Scheduled for May 27 at the Bingo Hall, the event will provide practical tips on bear safety, including a hands-on bear spray demonstration. All are welcome.

Hey, let’s be real for a second: grizzly bears aren’t just a Yellowstone or Western Montana thing anymore. They are officially moving east, with confirmed sightings popping up right in the Bear Paws. Whether you’re out checking fences, casting a line, or just trying to enjoy a walk without becoming a wildlife headline, it’s time to get bear-smart.

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), you have the perfect chance to do just that without any of the stuffy classroom setting.

FWP and Fort Belknap Fish and Wildlife are teaming up to host a casual, community-first Bear Aware Meeting. Here are the quick details you need to know:

  • When: TOMORROW, Wednesday, May 27, from 5:30 p.m. to around 7:00 p.m.
  • Where: The Bingo Hall (400 Agency Main Street) in Fort Belknap.
  • Who’s invited: Literally everyone. Landowners, hunters, hikers, birdwatchers, or anyone who prefers not to surprise a 400-pound omnivore.

Instead of a dry lecture, FWP’s wildlife stewardship outreach specialist, Danielle Oyler, is going to break down the reality of our changing backyard. She’ll cover how FWP manages these situations, the challenges of grizzly expansion, and—most importantly—how to keep your property from looking like a giant bear buffet. You’ll get practical tips on securing attractants so bears stay out of your trash, feed, and residential spaces.

The “Charging Bear” Simulator

Knowing how to use bear spray in your kitchen is one thing; pulling it off when your adrenaline is spiking is another. To wrap things up, the crew is setting up a hands-on demonstration with inert bear spray. You’ll get to practice your aim on a simulated charging bear. All the thrill, zero actual danger.

It’s going to be an educational, conversational evening packed with info that could genuinely save a life (yours or the bear’s). Swing by the Bingo Hall, grab a seat, and let’s learn how to share the landscape safely.
