Don Wilkins’ Fishing Report: What’s Biting at Fort Peck

Don Wilkins reports excellent fishing at Fort Peck, with walleye actively biting in shallow waters. Anglers should use jigs, plastics, and crankbaits as water temperatures rise this season.

Fort Peck is alive and kicking, and if you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to hitch up the boat, this is it. As the reservoir transitions into its prime late-spring rhythm, the bite is diversifying across the board. Whether you’re chasing trophy walleye or looking for a fight in the shallows, the current conditions are playing right into the hands of prepared anglers.

Here’s Don Wilkins’ latest, as of May 8, 2026:

The spring walleye bite is still very good on the North end of the lake right now. Dragging fathead minnows on the bottom with a jig head has been the most effective presentation for most of the past week.

We found most of our fish from 12-20 FOW and used our side imaging to find some decent pockets of fish before setting up.
Water temps haven’t changed much and are still in the low to mid 40’s,keeping a good amount of lakers shallow still. Trolling crankbaits in 15-35 feet of water is still turning up a good amount of fish
