Clark Fork Fishing Report Scores 2/5 for Fishability by Blackfoot River Outfitters

This weekend in Missoula promises mixed weather with rain and snow, while the Clark Fork River improves in fishability. Fishers should prepare with diverse fly patterns and patience.

Mother Nature is throwing a bit of a weekend tantrum, but the river is clearing its throat and getting ready to sing, according to the latest report for the Clark Fork by Blackfoot River Outfitters on May 15, 2026 Here’s a summary of what they reported:

If you’re heading out Saturday or Sunday, pack a heavy jacket and maybe a thermos of something stiff. Missoula is trading 60-degree sunshine for a dramatic weekend cocktail of rain, snow, and highs struggling to hit the mid-40s. The good news? Monday hits the reset button. The weather clears out, and we’re climbing right back into the glorious 60s for the rest of the week.

  • The Clark Fork: It’s a bit like looking through a foggy window right now—fishable, but it’s still working on its complexion. As the weekend flows drop, clarity will get better. For your best shot, stay upstream of where the Blackfoot dumps in.
  • The Rules: Don’t get eager with the side streams. Tributaries are strictly off-limits until they officially open on Saturday, May 16th.

Dry fly action is playing hard to get and changes by the day. Your best strategy is a “business on the top, party on the bottom” approach—go with a dry-dropper rig to cover your bases.

  • Up Top: Floating couch cushions like a Chubby Chernobyl or Water Walker, or reliable crowd-pleasers like an Elk Hair Caddis or Purple Haze.
  • Down Below: Drop a TJ, Prince, or Jig PT underneath.
  • The Secret Weapon: Don’t leave home without some red or pink San Juan Worms. Rumor has it the Salmonflies are getting restless too, so make sure your fly box has a few heavy hitters ready for the main event.

Don’t Wing It: Weather and water are moving fast!
