Team USA’s Journey at the 2026 Ice Fishing Championship

The XXII World Ice Fishing Championship 2026 concluded in Sweden with Team USA finishing 10th. Their experience highlighted growth and camaraderie despite the competition, showcasing the passion for ice fishing.

The XXII World Ice Fishing Championship 2026 recently wrapped up on the frozen waters of Sörfjärden in Piteå, Sweden, and while the United States of America didn’t land on the podium, the team’s performance was fueled by a remarkable spirit of competition.

Finishing in 10th place with a total of 75 points and nearly 30 kilograms of fish, the U.S. squad faced off against global powerhouses like Lithuania and Latvia. Despite the tough ranking, the Americans showed grit and tactical improvement as the event progressed, sharpening their performance in the second leg of the tournament. The journey was a testament to the growing skill of American ice anglers on the international stage, proving that they can hold their own in the challenging, high-pressure environment of a World Championship.

Adding a local flair to the international event, the Montana Outdoor Podcast recently featured two members of Team USA, Joe Martinez from Utah and Thane Melton from Montana, giving fans an inside look at the preparation and passion required to compete at this level. Their stories highlighted that while the final scoreboard is important, the true value of the trip lay in the camaraderie shared between nations and the thrill of fishing the pristine Swedish wilderness.

From the opening ceremonies to the final weigh-in, the 2026 Championship was defined by fun, friendship, and the unique bond that only a shared love for the ice can create. The U.S. team returns home with heads held high, ready to take the lessons learned in Piteå and apply them to future runs for the gold. We can’t wait to see what next year brings!
