New Backcountry Camping Rules at Beartooth WMA

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will no longer allow caching supplies at Beartooth Wildlife Management Area, enforcing a leave-no-trace policy starting May 15 for visitors during hunting season.

If you’re planning a backcountry stay at the Beartooth Wildlife Management Area near Wolf Creek, pack smart—because you’ll be packing everything in and out from now on, according to FWP. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is ending the practice of caching firewood, hay, and other supplies ahead of hunting season after years of rule-breaking. Starting May 15, when the WMA opens, no more stashing gear in advance—what comes in with you leaves with you.

The 35,000-acre Beartooth WMA was originally purchased to protect crucial winter range for elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep, and it remains a popular spot for hunting and other outdoor recreation. The new rule simply brings it in line with other FWP properties. Translation: leave no trace, and no leftover firewood either.
