Missing in Montana: The Mysterious Disappearance of Barbara Bolick

In Montana, some trails end in mystery — and Barbara’s story is one that still haunts the hills…

In Montana, we know how quickly the backcountry can turn familiar ground into a riddle. One second you’re going for a hike with somebody, the next you turn around — and they are simply gone. That is exactly what happened on July 18, 2007, when 51-year-old Barbara Bolick literally disappeared near the Bear Creek Overlook outside of Victor. Sixteen years later, the Bitterroot Mountains still hold their silence, and Barbara’s family still waits for answers.

Barbara wasn’t alone that day. She was hiking with a partner who, after only a brief glance away, realized she had disappeared. No sound. No trace. Search dogs, volunteers, and law enforcement scoured the rugged country, but not a single sign of her was ever found. As of 2023, Barbara would be 71 years old. She is 5’0”, 115 pounds, with auburn hair, brown eyes, pierced ears, and was last seen in a pastel shirt, tan shorts, and carrying a black backpack.

Montana isn’t a stranger to disappearances, but cases like Barbara’s linger because they leave no trail to follow, just questions. If you know anything — no matter how small — the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office wants to hear from you. Contact Special Agent Lee Oly at (406) 830-8020, Special Agent Norm Wight at (406) 830-7006, or Ravalli County Lt. Zae Hudson at (406) 375-4020. In a state where the mountains don’t give up secrets easily, maybe someone out there holds the missing piece.

And a reminder for the rest of us who lace up boots and step onto those same logging roads and trails…Montana keeps her secrets sometimes, no matter how much we search. One thing we can do is keep telling their stories, so the lost are not forgotten.
