FWP Helena Area Reservoirs Fishing Report 9.8.25

Canyon Ferry’s walleyes are on the chew, with bottom bouncers and bright colors pulling fish from the depths for anglers willing to chase them…

Canyon Ferry: The walleye bite continues to provide some good action from White Earth and north along the west shore, between Avalanche and Hellgate, and the Goose Bay/ Snaggy Bay areas. Trolling bottom bouncers with a worm harness in 20 to 30 feet of water with chartreuse or white being the preferred color.  Some walleyes are being caught in 40 or more feet of water.  Rapalas and jigs are working as well. A few perch are being caught by anglers using walleye rigs in these same areas.  Rainbows are being caught on walleye gear, lures or cowbells in the traditional walleye spots as well as the north end of the reservoir around Cemetary Island and mid-reservoir around Goose Bay.  Shore fishing is slow.  Troy Humphrey, FWP, Helena

Hauser: The Causeway Bridge has been a popular spot, and anglers are catching a few walleye, perch, and rainbow trout from shore while using various jigs and worms or plain crawlers under a slip bobber. A few trout are being caught around the Spokane Bay area while trolling dark colored crankbaits, and a few walleye are being caught while jigging around points and weed beds in the Causeway arm and around York Bridge. An occasional perch is being picked up while out searching for walleye.  Chris Hurley, FWP, Helena

Holter: Rainbow action has really picked up on the lower end of the reservoir. Trolling cowbells and wedding ring combos tipped with worms or corn, and using silver or gold crankbaits has been working well. The upper end of the reservoir has been popular for trout anglers as well and some nice trout are being caught while fishing around the weed beds with worms under a slip bobber, spoons, or small nymph or leech pattern flies. An occasional kokanee is being caught near the Dam while trolling dodgers with hoochies and corn between 50 and 60 feet of water. Good numbers of perch are still being found while pitching jigs and worms around various points and weed beds throughout the reservoir. A few walleye are being caught in the same areas as the perch.   Chris Hurley, FWP, Helena
