August in Montana means warm water, early mornings, and picky fish. On the big rivers, trout are feeling the heat, so most action is before 11 a.m. with small hoppers, ants, and beetles getting it done. Afternoon temps have rivers running low and clear, so pack the sunscreen and keep your releases quick.
Smallmouth and perch are lighting up on Fort Peck and Canyon Ferry with jigs and crankbaits along rocky points. Walleye are holding deeper, chasing slow-trolled spinner rigs. Over in the mountain lakes, cutthroat and brookies are still hitting spinners and woolly buggers, especially if you hike in a little farther than everyone else.
