Montana Magic with Rod Benders to Personal Bests

Angler Aaron McAllister called this year’s Skidoo Bay whitefish trip the best yet…

According to a post in the Flathead Valley Fishing Report group, another whitefish trip is in the books for Idaho angler Aaron McAllister, and he said that this year’s visit to see longtime friend Craig Woods at Flathead Lake may have been the best yet. He’s been making the annual trek for 7–8 years, but this time, the bite was red-hot from start to finish.

At several points, the action was so fast that he didn’t even pick up a rod—just ran the net and unhooked fish so the others could stay on the bite. The crew culled plenty of smaller fish, keeping only the larger whitefish, mostly 19 inches and up.

A highlight of the trip came when McAllister’s girlfriend, Chantel Dailey, landed her personal best: a 15-pound lake trout. In addition to the steady whitefish action, they also hooked into a solid number of lakers throughout the day.

They fished Skidoo Bay in 46 to 52 feet of water, staying away from the crowds and instead targeting steep drop-offs. By graphing for bait and small groups of fish, then dropping waypoints and circling back, they found consistent success.

McAllister gave special thanks to JT Tackle for the jigs that got the job done—and to Montana itself for another unforgettable fishing adventure for this crew.

Nice work!
