The Clearwater River in Idaho is a wonderful fishery. You can cast for several wonderful species of fish from steelhead to Smallmouth Bass.
The state of Idaho has no limits on their smallmouth fishery in the Clearwater. My guess is that these wonderful bass are not native and not wanted. In Montana, the FWP freaks out when Smallmouths were discovered near Gardiner, in the Yellowstone River. Smallmouth bass are aggressive and will eat smaller native fish.
Fish swim and the climate changes, creating different water conditions. Sadly, Bucket Biologists illegally dump invasive species around our watersheds indiscriminately. It’s important to let the biologists do their jobs and keep our fisheries under control and healthy.
My friend Eric Wilcox is a wonderful guide that works through Swiftwater Outfitters. Eric is a good teacher and adaptable angler. His approach to fishing is simple and effective. He also wears the biggest hats on the river.
Right now, is when the Clearwater River is perfect to catch Smallmouth Bass. Anglers that have caught this wonderful bass to brag about how hard they fight. Ounce per ounce, I would agree that this fish is the strongest freshwater fish to catch.
These bass are also delicious. Their white flakey meat is tasty and healthy. The Clearwater River is a clean watershed that supports these sporting whoppers.
Bass fishing is a great way to fly fish or use other conventional tackle. Family and kids can be successful catching these eager to fight and bite fish.
