Backcountry camping up on the border? You’ll want to take note of this.
A popular backcountry campsite on the U.S.-Canada border is closed this week after a mountain lion approached two campers and showed interest in their dog.
From Parks Canada:
Camping restrictions: Bertha Bay and Boundary Bay backcountry campgrounds.
Cougar warning: Bertha Trail, Bertha Lake backcountry campground, Lakeshore Trail.
Why: A cougar approached two campers at Bertha Bay campground and showed interest in their dog.
Until further notice, camping is not permitted at Bertha Bay and Boundary Bay campgrounds.
Bertha (Falls and Lake) Trail, Bertha Lake backcountry campground and Lakeshore Trail remain open. Special caution is recommended while travelling in these areas.
For this reason we advise:
– Keep children close at hand
– Travel in groups
– Carry bear spray and know how to use it
– Remain alert at all times, especially at dawn and dusk
– Keep your dog on a leash, or leave it at home
