“These photos, shared with me on June 11 by a Canadian friend, say it all — barely a trickle flowing through the Milk River near the town of Milk River, Alberta.
The failure of the St. Mary Siphon in June of 2024 has left much of the system dry. It’s a powerful reminder of how critical this infrastructure is—not just for the Hi-Line in Montana, but also for our neighbors to the north.
Without the St. Mary system delivering water, southern Alberta is facing very dry conditions. In a year like this, with limited snowpack and runoff, the importance of this St. Mary system couldn’t be clearer.
We’re working hard to get it fixed, but the impacts are real—and they cross borders. This isn’t just a local issue. It’s international.
