Grizzly Bear Research Underway in Southwestern Montana: Public Advised to Heed Safety Signs

Grizzly bear capture efforts begin soon in Montana

Capture operations as part of cooperative grizzly bear research will begin soon on public and private lands in the Gravelly and Madison ranges in southwestern Montana. Biologists with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team will begin field captures June 1 and continue through Aug. 15.

Biologists use natural food sources to attract bears to capture sites. Areas where capture work is happening and nearby access points will be posted with bright warning signs for public safety. Visitors who encounter these signs should follow the instructions on them.

Population monitoring is vital to ongoing research and management of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Learn more: https://www.usgs.gov/…/interagency-grizzly-bear-study-team
