Stay Sharpie

Who knew a humble Sharpie could be your secret fishing weapon? From marking depths to counting catches—and even turning one into a lure—this little pen packs a punch on the water. More from Montana Grant here….

Sharpie pens have been around for a long time. These permanent markers come in a variety of colors and sizes. Even President Trump uses BIG Sharpies to sign his Presidential orders.

One of my new trout fishing buddies would write every trip and catch data, on the inside of his hip boots! He also marked his tackle boxes and other gear, proficiently.

There are many uses for Sharpie when fishing. Consider carrying a few different colored pens when on the water.

Here are some ideas on how to use a Sharpie when fishing.

Keep count of your catch   Make a dot on your boots, boat, cooler, or… to keep track of how many fish you have caught.

Mark the line for accurate depth readings.    If you are jigging at a specific depth, mark the fishing line to match how deep you fish.

Label your cleaned fish bags.    Label your catch bags with a date, species, location, or number of fish.

Mark on your plugs for depth.    Different plugs track different depths. Label the depth that they swim.

Mark a ruler on the boat gunwale to accurately measure for slot and legal limits.  This quick check ruler can go on a rod, boat gunwale, cooler lid, or… It may come in handy for measuring and tying leaders.

Blacken a shiny hook.    You can quickly color a stainless-steel circle hook or lures that are too shiny.

Decorate your lures, spinners, flies, jigs, bobbers, or…     Different colors, or patterns, can make a difference in the bite.

Make a Sharpie into a lure.    You can decorate and add hooks and eyes to a pen to create a great jerk bait or plug.

Label you gear.     If you mark your name, phone number, or address on your tackle, you may get it back if you lose it.

Maybe leave a note for your buddies, or pen pals, at the truck or communicate with others. A pen is always handy.

Stay Sharp!
