While Oklahoma is busy tightening the rules for nonresident hunters and professional guides, with new legislation creating permit lotteries and guide licensing requirements, Montana is sticking with a different path. In the Sooner State, out-of-state hunters will now have to win a lottery just to access certain public lands and pay extra fees on top of their licenses, while guides will soon need to be licensed through the state. Supporters say it’s all about managing overcrowding and protecting resident access. But up in Montana, it’s still the wild west in comparison with no signs of change on the horizon. It’s a reminder that hunting policy isn’t one-size-fits-all, and where you hunt can shape your entire experience.
