An Irish woman, Lorraine Learmont, has filed a lawsuit against the Triangle C Ranch near Dubois, Wyoming, following an incident during a guided horseback excursion on July 16, 2024. According to the complaint, the ranch’s lead wrangler accidentally discharged bear spray into the eyes of Learmont’s horse while attempting to retrieve a water bottle from her saddlebag. This caused the horse to spook, bucking and ultimately falling backward onto Learmont, resulting in a crushed ankle.
The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the ranch and asserts violations of the Wyoming Recreation Safety Act. Learmont’s injuries were severe, necessitating surgery and a 28-day rehabilitation period in Ireland. She continues to experience limited mobility and ongoing pain.
In response to the incident, the ranch owner reportedly implemented a new policy prohibiting the carrying of bear spray during rides.
This case underscores the importance of stringent safety protocols during guided outdoor activities and highlights the potential legal ramifications when such protocols are not adequately followed.
