Flathead National Forest’s West Reservoir Project open for public comment

The project activities include approximately 2,000 acres of commercial timber harvest and approximately 6,189 acres of noncommercial vegetation treatments.

Kalispell, MT, January 21, 2025 — Today, the Flathead National Forest announces the beginning of the West Reservoir Project. Comments on this project will be accepted now through February 21, 2025, and will be used to refine the proposed activities and conduct the environmental analysis for this project.

The project area is located on the Hungry Horse and Spotted Bear Ranger Districts, along the west side of the Hungry Horse Reservoir, within Flathead County.

The project would improve the diversity and resilience of terrestrial ecosystems and vegetation, which promotes healthy forest stands. It would also reduce fuels near developed recreation sites, structures, and other areas where wildfires may pose a threat to important community assets.

“Some of the main goals for this project are to improve the health of our Forest, increase ungulate forage, improve fish passage at a couple key locations, and move towards restoring whitebark pine” said District Ranger Rob Davies.

The project activities include approximately 2,000 acres of commercial timber harvest and approximately 6,189 acres of noncommercial vegetation treatments. The project would add approximately five miles of road to the National Forest System.

A preliminary proposed action, descriptions of the management activities, and project area map is available on the project page, as well as instructions on how to provide comments: http://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=67436
