Monarchs in Decline, USFWS Proposes Protection

Monarch butterflies are fluttering towards trouble, with populations dropping by up to 80%! But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is stepping in…

Monarch butterflies are in trouble, according to a recent press release from Fish and Wildlife Services. These little orange-and-black icons have been wowing us for generations with their migrations and fluttery flights, but their numbers are dropping fast—like 80% fast in some populations. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is stepping up, proposing to list the monarch as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. They’re calling on all of us to pitch in and give these pollinators a fighting chance.

So, what can you do? Planting milkweed and nectar flowers, even in a small patch, can make a big difference. It’s kind of like a butterfly pit stop. And, if you have something to say about this, you can speak up. Public input is open until March 12, 2025, so let your voice be heard.

Any thoughts on this butterfly being listed?
