Sportsmen, and women, have come up with many abbreviations for their story telling. Only folks involved in the sport know the slang and lingo. Talking like a Pro is important if you want to be considered knowledgeable about the sport.
Fishing and Hunting are about a process or search but do not guarantee a catch, limit, bag, a full meat pole.
So, what is an Angler? How does an “angle’ relate to fishing? Anglers are “Reelers, Hookers, or the Rippers of Lips”. There is plenty of “Tangling” involved but what does an “Angle” mean?
Fly guys love “C and R”. This means to Catch and Release. Anyone that does not safely return a fly caught fish back to the water is often chastised. Catch and Release is a wonderful choice, but a delicious fish sandwich is very tasty. “Meat Fishermen and Bait Fishermen” are often looked down upon. They “Killem and Grillem”. Fish cleaning, filleting, Gutting, or Mongering are part of their skill set.
Hunters like to “Whackem and Stackem”. They also Taggem, Hammerem, and Limit Out. They hunt for “Big Racks, Wall Hangers, Horns, Monster Bucks”, and “Cocks”.
Anglers catch “Hawgs, Pigs, Lunkers, Bigguns, Keepers, Monsters, and Moby Dicks”.
Missing a bite is something to talk about, you were “Bait Raped”, “Cleaned”, had a” Hit and Run”, or the fish “Stole your Bait”.
Having a Fish On after setting the hook, crossing their eyes, having a “Love Tap”, a” Hit”, “Strike”, or a “Bite”.
Anglers angle, jig, bottom bounce, bait, chunk, noodle, lure, spin, casting, dropping a line, cane pole, Bank fish, troll, and get involved Hook, Line, and Sinker!” Reeling them in and fishing for compliments go hand in hand.
Sportsmen love to Catch some rays, sit in a tree, stalk, ambush, snag, toss a line, just spend time afield or on the water. “Boaters cruise, anglers “Hit the Water”, Bird hunters take their dogs for a walk, all sports love to be a part of Nature.
Communication is key when pursuing our sports. We cackle, bugle, vibrate, jiggle, wiggle, strip, jerk, aim small, cast, lure, gobble, whistle, cluck, purr, jitterbug, pop, rattle, grunt, whine, squeal, and flop while making our best presentations.
It’s important to know what you are talking about. Sporting Lingo can be more complicated than encrypted digital language. When you get Buck or Fish Fever, you are Chasing Fins, Looking for Horns, or Baiting a hook.
