Brett French reports: Big Sky opens Lone Peak Tram for summer trips

On a blue sky weekend it’s hard to top the view from 11,166-foot Lone Peak in the Madison Range. On clear days you can see the Tetons in Wyoming, not to mention the surrounding Gallatin, Tobacco Root and Spanish Peaks. Despite its height, the peak is once again accessible via tours at Big Sky Resort. Visitors start at the base of the mountain, taking a chairlift ride up to an awaiting pickup truck modified with seats in the back. From there, the truck drives a short distance to the base of the Lone Peak Tram. The tram quickly covers the distance to the top, with spectacular views of the basin along the way. Visitors then have about 30 minutes to walk around, snap photos and take in the view before descending. The tours can be purchased online or at the base area. Group size is limited and a guide goes along to impart updates on Big Sky’s expanding resort offerings. In a couple of years, visitors will be able to hop on a gondola to the base of the tram, eliminating the need for the truck ride.
