We all are looking forward to Spring, warmer weather, and more comfortable outdoor recreation. Sadly, March in Montana may not be the month we want. Winter still rules but there is hope for the future.
“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” This idea relates to weather. As the Earth gets closer to the sun, the northern hemisphere goes through a weather awakening. Storms, wind, and changes begin. Nature begins to sprout, and hibernation of critters is over.
Mars is named after The God of War, in Roman culture. March historically has sponsored the beginning of many wars. The original Roman calendar made March the first month of a 10-month calendar. This time was the beginning time. There was no January or February. December was the last month of the year. Many wars historically begin or renew in March.
Many holidays and celebrations happen in March. Gardening and farming also start to take root. The aquamarine or green month is when grass and crops begin to emerge.
March is the month boasting the highest number of Vasectomies! Apparently, men need to rest for a week of recovery. This coincides with March Madness, the annual college basketball tournaments. Men can become couch potatoes for a week without catching grief from their wives!
It also turns out that March is the least productive month of the year. Winter seems to have made workers lazier and more unmotivated.
Daylight Savings time is the beginning of exciting people to do more. Longer days mean an increase in productivity, vitamin D, energy, and a more positive attitude. The Vernal Equinox happens on March 20-21st.
