The trout are currently hugging the banks and hiding behind boulders like they owe someone money, so target that soft water. Whether you want to dredge the bottom with a grocery list of worms or hurl dark, moody streamers, they are ready to bite. Just keep a few dry flies on standby, because if you spot a rise, it’s time to party on the surface.

The Gallatin river is sitting at 1670 cfs this morning and it’s looking great out there. The flows are currently dropping, so it is game on. Fish are sitting in the softest water you can find, whether that be on the bank or in the middle behind rocks. Fishing with nymph rigs or streamers have been the most consistent ways to put fish in the net as of late. Some of our favorites this time of year are the Pat’s rubberlegs/girdle bug, squirmy worms, san juan worms, fish finder worm, pheasant tail, hare’s ear, perdigons, backflop jigs, or GDP Jigs. Streamer fishing can be good as well with darker flies usually fishing better than flashier flies. Some of the shop favorites are the mini peanut envy, mini kill whitey, area 51, mini headbanger, MT intruder, and mini dragon! If you see fish rising try a puff caddis, corn fed caddis, cinnamon stubby chubby, buzzball, parachute Adams, or purple haze.
