Runoff season is in full swing across much of Montana, but that doesn’t mean fishing is off the table. Many freestone rivers, including portions of the Yellowstone, Clark Fork, and Bitterroot, are running high and carrying plenty of color. Anglers looking for success are focusing on tailwaters, reservoirs, and smaller tributaries that are holding better clarity.
The Missouri continues to be one of the state’s most reliable fisheries, with trout feeding on nymphs, worms, and streamers. Canyon Ferry is producing decent walleye and perch action, while Fort Peck anglers are finding success with walleye and smallmouth along rocky structure and windblown shorelines.
Stillwater fishing is becoming a great option as temperatures warm. Many smaller lakes are seeing active trout cruising shorelines during the early morning and evening hours. If you’re heading out this weekend, flexibility will be your best friend. Conditions can change quickly this time of year, but there are still plenty of fish willing to bite if you find clean water.
