Runoff is gaining steam across Montana, and conditions are getting a little tricky. Many freestone rivers like the Yellowstone and Bitterroot are running high and muddy, making fishing tough in those systems. The key right now is finding cleaner water.

Tailwaters like the Missouri are still fishing well and remain one of the most reliable options. Nymphing with baetis, midges, and worms is producing steady action. Streamers are also a solid choice with the added color in the water. Smaller creeks and tributaries can offer decent clarity and less pressure if you’re willing to explore.

It’s classic spring fishing — not always easy, but still plenty of opportunities if you adapt. With a little effort, you can still find fishable water and some solid action.
