Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) officials are investigating a recent black crappie fish kill at Nelson Reservoir after receiving reports of dead fish washing ashore. While the exact cause remains a mystery, biologists are working quickly to determine if the cause is environmental, biological, or pathologically driven.
Investigation at Nelson Reservoir
The incident was first brought to light on April 16, when a concerned cabin owner alerted FWP authorities to several dead crappie near their property.
Fisheries technician Dawson Schott conducted a field investigation shortly after the report. The initial sweep revealed:
- 21 adult black crappie near the original reporting site.
- Approximately 30 additional fish discovered during a secondary survey near the main boat ramp on the eastern end of the reservoir.
Note: At this time, the die-off appears to be localized to adult black crappie; no other species have been reported in significant numbers.
What Happens Next?
FWP fisheries staff are currently collecting samples from the affected area. These specimens will be transported to the FWP Fish Health Lab for comprehensive diagnostic testing.
While the public is understandably concerned, FWP officials emphasize that:
- The cause is currently unknown.
- Lab results will take time to process and analyze.
- No fish consumption advisories have been issued in relation to this specific incident.
