Is the Boulder River Ready for Spring Fishing?

The Boulder River is still experiencing winter conditions despite the arrival of spring. While fishing is decent, especially with smaller nymph patterns, water temperatures remain low. Anglers are encouraged to explore better fishing spots like Paradise Valley Spring Creeks near Livingston until the Boulder improves in mid-April.

If you’ve been staring at your fly rod with romantic longing, hoping the Boulder River is ready for a spring fling, I have some “it’s not you, it’s the temperature” news. While the calendar says spring, the river is still very much in a committed relationship with winter. Before you pull on the neoprene and prepare to question your sanity in the name of a nibble, let’s break down why you might want to point your GPS toward Livingston instead of toughing it out in the slush. Here is the “too cold to care” forecast for the Boulder.

Here’s the latest report from Montana Angler:

Even as spring slowly comes to the Boulder River, things on the Boulder are still cold. The fishing is not awesome, but it is not too bad either. If you do go….Nymphing with smaller patterns can be productive, but the water temps are still pretty darn cold for decent fishing.

The Month Ahead:

Cold, clear, and low and just better places to go fishing right now like the Paradise Valley Spring Creeks near Livingston and Bozeman.

Long Term Fishing Forecast:

Until we get into April, the Boulder can still produce the next few weeks, but there will be better options in the area until mid-April, when the Boulder River comes back on the menu as a good option for fishing.
