If you’re heading out to the Spring Creeks in the Paradise Valley, Yellowstone Angler suggests that you leave the heavy artillery at home and grab something a bit more soulful…for lack of a better word. As of Monday, March 23, 2026, they say they have been leaning on the Livingston Rod Co 8’9″ 3-weight, stating that it is the perfect tool for these fish, who are currently “spring creek spooky.”
With temps hitting the 70s, the Baetis are definitely waking up under the rocks. They are definitely seeing a few dries already, but until the hatch really pops, your best bet is staying low and slow.
If the surface is quiet, maybe try to drift a Zebra Midge or a tiny scud. Just keep one eye on the horizon; if the wind starts picking up again, that 3-weight will turn into a wet noodle, so maybe keep a 5-weight with you as a backup plan.
They also remind anglers that the rainbows are starting to spawn. If you see fish on the redds, give them some space and find a different run—there are plenty of non-spawners looking for a meal. Just remember to land those fish…you may need to be stealthy
Yellowstone Angler says to use 6X or 6.5X tippet (TroutHunter or SA are good go-tos) to get that drag-free drift, but be ready to move if they head for the weeds.
