Mid-March in Montana means winter and spring are still arguing about who’s in charge. Ice fishing opportunities are fading quickly on many lakes, with warming afternoons creating soft shorelines and inconsistent ice conditions. A few smaller lakes are still holding fishable ice, but anglers should be cautious and check thickness often before heading out.

Open water is becoming the better option in most places. Rivers like the Madison and Missouri are producing steady trout action with midges, small nymphs, and the occasional streamer. The bite is still best mid-day when temperatures warm up a little. On cloudy days, anglers are starting to see the first hints of spring insect activity.

It’s a transition period, but that usually means fewer crowds and some surprisingly good fishing if you time it right.
