Montana Big Cat Closures: Region 6 Bobcat Season Ends Feb. 28; LMU 280 Male Mountain Lion Closes Feb. 27, 2026

Montana FWP reports two quota-driven big cat closures: bobcat hunting and trapping in Region 6 ends at midnight Saturday, Feb. 28, and LMU 280 closes to the hunting of male mountain lions one-half hour after sunset Friday, Feb. 27, 2026. Here’s what to know and where to check official quota updates before you head out.

Montana’s big cats are officially calling “last call” in parts of the Hi-Line.

According to information from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), bobcat hunting and trapping in Region 6 will close at midnight on Saturday, February 28, by order of the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission. If you’ve still got a tag in your pocket and plans on the calendar, the clock is ticking. Hunters and trappers can check current quota status anytime on FWP’s website to make sure they’re on the right side of the line before heading out.

And that’s not the only feline update. Also by order of the Commission, LMU 280 will close to the hunting of male mountain lions one-half hour after sunset on Friday, February 27, 2026. When it comes to managing big cats, timing is everything. These closures are tied directly to quota numbers — once they’re met, the season wraps up. For detailed mountain lion quota status, FWP has up-to-date information available online.

Big cats may move quietly, but their seasons don’t. If you’re chasing whiskers and tracks this week, make sure you check the official FWP quota pages before you lace up your boots.
