Lower Madison Fishing Report 1.18.26

Size 18 Flies, Big Results…Here’s What’s Working Right Now on the Madison

The following report is from Yellow Dog Flyfishing:

*Flow Data: Madison River below Ennis Lake near McAllister, MT

The weather is looking to be really nice for the next 7 days at least. Fishing was slower last week but is picking up once again. Well worth getting out with the nice weather this week. You may still see some fish rising when the wind is low and we have some cloud cover. Keep an eye out for hatching midges through the winter. Nymphing has been the most consistent way to catch trout on the lower. Streamer fishing has slowed with the cold. Fishing a size #18 or #20 Griffith’s gnat or Parachute Adams with good drag free drift has been very effective on the trout that are rising to midges. Perdigons, caddis pupa, and midges have been effective smaller nymphs. Worms and sowbugs should be in play through the winter. For streamer fishing, a Black Bugger, Skiddish Smolt, or Lil’ Kim may find a few fish here and there.
