***ACCESS AND SAFETY ALERT***

The wind event that impacted the Custer Gallatin National Forest in mid-December, resulted in numerous trees falling across roadways, trails, and campground areas. Forest staff have been actively engaged in removing obstructing trees since the incident. However, it is important to note that during the off-season, the agency operates with limited personnel. Most of the forest staff, including the trail crew, typically begin working later in this field season. While we are committed to addressing the downed trees, the extent of the damage is significant, and weakened trees continue to fall. This means recovery will take time and hazards will persist even after the wind event.

We advise visitors to anticipate blocked routes fallen trees that may affect their recreation and to remain vigilant when recreating in the area, as some seemingly stable trees may be compromised and could fall without warning. Visitors must take personal responsibility for their safety by remaining alert to the ongoing danger of falling timber.
