Late December fishing is all about timing and layers. Open rivers like the Madison, Missouri, and stretches of the Yellowstone are still giving up trout, but the window is short. Midges and tiny nymphs are the main play, with the best bite happening during the warmest part of the day. Slow drifts and patience are key.

Ice season is starting to take shape across the state. Fort Peck, Canyon Ferry, and smaller lakes are seeing more consistent ice in sheltered bays, with perch and walleye showing up for early hardwater anglers. Ice conditions are still variable, so checking thickness often is a must.

It’s quiet, cold, and about as peaceful as Montana fishing gets. If you can handle frozen guides and stiff fingers, there’s still plenty of action to be found.
