Stillwater River Fishing Report 11.28.25

Winter Is Closing In on the Stillwater—Are You Ready for the Last Good Bite?

The Stillwater River is running low, but anglers can still find trout sliding into the deeper slots, where nymphing remains productive. As one of Montana’s colder rivers, the Stillwater responds quickly to dropping temperatures, and once winter settles in, substantial ice shelves begin to form. With that seasonal shift in mind, here’s what to expect in the coming weeks and months, along with additional resources for planning your next fishing adventure.

The Month Ahead:

Fishing will be tough for most of the winter with ice shelves and slush.

Long Term Fishing Forecast:

The Stillwater is a relatively cold river and isn’t as productive as some other fisheries in the region in the winter months. April will result in better results but we wouldn’t recommend a long drive to get there until later in the spring when water temps produce more active fish.
