Chaos erupted in Canada on a Bella Coola trail Thursday when a grizzly bear charged out of the trees, seriously injuring three schoolkids and a teacher from Acwsalcta School. The fourth- and fifth-graders had been enjoying a nature stop when the bear attacked, forcing teachers to step in with bear spray and a loud pen-style flare known as a bear banger. One teacher, according to a parent, “took the brunt” of the attack, while terrified kids—including some doused with bear spray—watched in shock. Luckily, all four victims are receiving medical care, but classes are now canceled and outdoor activities paused as the community reels. Nuxalk Nation Chief Samuel Schooner praised the teachers for their “heroic actions,” and authorities are warning locals to steer clear of the area while the bear, believed to have been previously injured, remains on the loose. Meanwhile, families like Veronica Schooner’s are grappling with the aftermath—her 10-year-old son wasn’t hurt but still keeps praying for his friends.
