Winter is creeping in, but there’s still solid fishing to be had if you can handle the cold. Most of the big rivers — the Madison, Yellowstone, and Missouri — are low and clear, with browns wrapping up their spawn and rainbows starting to feed heavier. Streamers and small nymphs are the ticket right now.

Walleye are deep and slow on Fort Peck and Canyon Ferry, though some anglers are finding late-season fish by jigging vertically near structure. Trout are active along the shorelines of reservoirs and tailwaters, especially on overcast days.

With hunting season in full swing, there’s plenty of elbow room on the water. If you bundle up, you’ll likely have the river all to yourself — just watch for ice on your guides and frozen net cords.
