Upper Madison River Fishing Report 10.30.25

The Upper Madison River is fishing strong this week, with steady nymph action, improving streamer bites, and a few bonus dry-fly opportunities under calm fall conditions…

The following report is by Fins and Feathers in Bozeman and posted by Toby Swank–fishability scores a 4/5:

Current Conditions

The Upper Madison River is in great shape for late October, offering clear water and steady fishing from the Slide down through Ennis. Daytime temperatures have leveled off, keeping fish active and conditions stable through the week.

Nymphing remains the most consistent option. Rubberlegs, worms, and small jig patterns are working well up front, paired with droppers such as Frenchies, zebra midges, or perdigons. Productive drifts have been coming from deeper seams and moderate-speed runs.

Streamer fishing continues to show good potential. Mini dungeons, sculpzillas, and sparkle minnows in olive, black, or tan have been drawing strikes when fished slowly through deeper water. Early morning and late afternoon have been the best windows for action.

Dry-fly opportunities are limited but improving. Blue-winged olives and midges are appearing during calmer weather, and fish have been feeding selectively when the wind drops. A few small emergers or parachutes can cover those short surface chances.

The Upper Madison is a strong choice right now for anglers around Ennis. Nymphing is dependable, streamers are producing with some consistency, and light hatch activity is adding variety as fall conditions continue to settle in.
