Reminder: Elk Calls Can Also Lure Predators

An elk hunter is recovering after his calls drew a grizzly sow and cubs into a surprise encounter.

An elk hunter near Fort Steele, B.C. got a little too convincing with his elk calls last week—unfortunately, the first responder wasn’t a bull but a grizzly sow with cubs. The bear charged, leaving the hunter seriously injured before he was rescued and flown to the hospital, where he’s now stable. Wildlife officials say the calls likely drew the bears in, a reminder that when you’re in grizzly country—whether it’s the East Kootenays or across the border in Montana—you’re never the only one listening. Both regions are deep in elk season, and hunters are being urged to be ready for anything that might come calling back.
