Fall fishing is starting to heat up. Cooler mornings have rivers in better shape, and trout are more active through the day. On the Madison and Yellowstone, streamer fishing is picking up for browns staging for the spawn. Nymphs and baetis dries are also producing during cloudy stretches.
On Fort Peck and Canyon Ferry, walleye are holding deeper, but action is steady on crankbaits trolled along rocky ledges. Smallmouth are still aggressive, especially in the afternoons when the sun warms the rocks.
Up high, alpine lakes are cooling fast. Brookies are in spawning colors and hitting just about anything that crosses their path. September is shaping up as prime time before the weather turns.
