The Best Fishing

September flips the switch in Montana—cooler weather, fewer crowds, and hungry trout make it the start of the state’s best fishing…

September is the beginning of Montana’s best fishing. The weather and culture take a change for the best.

Temperatures cool down which means the hoot Owl restrictions will be lifted. Cool water also means more active feeding fish. Fish need to put on some pounds before winter sets in. This also means the water is too cold for tubers and swimmers that crowd the water during August.

Lakes can offer the beginning of spawning cycles. Big trout will be cruising the shorelines as they travel to spawning locations.

Most folks have used up their vacation time or are saving what is left for hunting. This means less crowds on the water.

School opens, which means tourists and crowds will need to get back to work and families. Sports season also begins. Do you fish or go to a Bobcat/Grizz game?

Adapt and adjust to what nature brings. Fish feed hard in the Fall preparing for a long Winter.

Hunting season opens which means sportsmen and women need to pick whether to fish or hunt.

Fall fishing is beautiful. The leaves change color, critters are more active, and the tourists go home.

Locals finally get a shot at great fishing with less competition.

Bad concerns.

This time of year, can also mean problems with forest fires. We are already seeing fires erupting near prime fisheries.

Montana weather is unpredictable. This year’s predictions forecast a harsh and early winter. Ice fishing may be here early.

Not fishing at all! This is never a good plan.

Fish Hard, Fish Harder!
