If Montana wolves are the steak-and-potatoes type, being big, burly, and chasing down elk and moose, then the Vancouver Coastal sea wolf is their sushi-loving cousin who’d rather spend the day on the beach. Wikipedia states that they are found along the Pacific Northwest’s shorelines, and these semi-aquatic wolves dive into a seafood-heavy diet of clams, crabs, and salmon heads, and even swim long distances (for wolves) between islands. Smaller and leaner than their inland relatives, these sea wolves have adapted perfectly to a saltwater lifestyle that makes them feel more at home in tidepools over timber.
But while Montana wolves symbolize the rugged mountains, sea wolves pretty much represent the mystery of the coast…so much so that Indigenous peoples have celebrated them in stories and legends for many centuries. Today, they’re still navigating the balance between awe and threat: revered for their uniqueness, yet pressured by tourism, hunting, and shrinking habitat. In other words, if wolves were family, Montana’s wolves might be the classic cowboys, while Vancouver’s wolves would be the free-spirited surfers with sand in their fur.
