Bright Wildlife Ideas for Dark Roads

Just over a decade ago, Finland gave their reindeer a glow-up—literally—to stop car collisions; should Montana’s elk be next?

Back in 2014, the BBC reported on a Finnish experiment that gave Rudolph more than just a red nose—herders in Lapland were spraying reindeer antlers with reflective paint so drivers could spot them on dark, icy roads. The hope was to have fewer than the thousands of reindeer get hit each year by vehicles. Which makes us wonder—what if Montana’s wildlife got the same high-vis treatment? Picture whitetails with neon rack tips, elk antlers glowing like airport runways, or pronghorns decked out in glow-in-the-dark racing stripes. Could it cut down on late-night wildlife collisions here… or just kick off the flashiest critter fashion show the Rockies have ever seen?
