FWP Helena Area Reservoirs Fishing Report 7.28.25

Walleye, perch, rainbows, and kokanee are all biting across Canyon Ferry, Hauser, and Holter, with early mornings, trolling rigs, and a variety of baits proving key to success…

Canyon Ferry: Walleye were caught between Confederate and Duck Creek, Hole in the Wall and Silos and around Hellgate, both in the bay and the outside points.  Trolling bottom bouncers with various color spinner blades, Slow death rigs, rapalas or casting jigs in 20 to 30 feet of water were equally successful.  A few perch are being caught by anglers using walleye rigs in these same areas.  Rainbows are being caught on walleye gear, lures or cowbells in the traditional walleye spots as well as the north end of the reservoir around Cemetery Island and Hellgate. Shore fishing is slow.  Troy Humphrey, FWP, Helena

Hauser: Rainbow fishing continues to be good early in the morning below Canyon Ferry Dam while using crawlers and a marshmallow or powerbait from shore, and while trolling gold-colored crankbaits or cowbells and spinner combos out from White Sandy. A few Walleye and perch are being caught while using various jigs and leeches or crawler pieces inside the Causeway arm, and near the York Bridge area.  Chris Hurley, FWP, Helena

Holter: The perch and walleye fishing continues to be good while using various jigs tipped with crawlers or leeches in 8 to 18 feet of water around Mann Gulch, Cottonwood Creek, and other small bays and weed beds throughout the reservoir. Rainbow fishing has been consistently good during the early morning hours throughout most of the reservoir while trolling perch or gold-colored crankbaits or cowbells with spinners. The best kokanee bite has been in the early morning, while trolling dodgers with hoochies or wedding rings tipped with shoepeg corn around 60 to 70 feet deep near the Dam.   Chris Hurley, FWP, Helena
