What is Wrapped Around a Woodpecker’s Brain?

Think a long tongue is weird? How about one that’s also a shock absorber….

Think woodpeckers just peck trees all day? Think again. Hidden inside those hardworking heads is one of the most interesting tongues in the animal kingdom. Not only are their tongues super long—some wrap all the way around the back of their skulls—but they also double as built-in shock absorbers, helping protect their brains during high-speed pecking. Kind of like part tool, part helmet strap, and even a little hard to grasp the idea of.

According to the American Bird Conservancy, different species come with their own custom tongue designs: barbed for bug snatching, sticky for ant slurping, and even brush-tipped for sipping sap. Whether they’re pecking through tree bark or tapping into a snack, woodpeckers are a masterclass in nature’s engineering. Next time you hear that tap-tap in the woods, just know there is way more going on than meets the eye—or ear.

Who knew?
