Milk River Project Update 5.29.25

A short detour now means a safer dam later—Fresno Road closes June 25 to July 2 for major upgrades…

This update is provided via The Milk River Project:

Heads up, Hi-Line travelers! The Bureau of Reclamation will temporarily close Fresno Reservoir Road across Fresno Dam from Wednesday, June 25 through Wednesday, July 2.

The closure is needed to support ongoing construction by NW Construction Inc. as part of the Fresno Safety of Dams Modification Project. Please plan ahead and use alternate routes north or south of the dam during this time.

Why now?

There’s never a perfect time to close this road, but by coordinating closely with the contractor, Reclamation is aiming to minimize impacts on local agriculture—timing the closure to avoid interfering with spraying, seeding, and harvest operations. The goal is to have the road back open in time for the July 4th holiday.

Important!

Throughout June, travelers should expect some one-lane traffic across the dam with a traffic light in place. Please follow the signal—this temporary setup helps avoid longer full closures and keeps things moving as safely and efficiently as possible.

Why the work?

Since it was built in 1939, Fresno Dam has settled nearly 7–10 feet—raising concerns about cracking and erosion. These upgrades are essential to ensure the dam continues serving our communities safely for years to come.

Fresno Dam is located about 15 miles west of Havre, MT and remains a cornerstone of the Milk River Project.

📞 For more info on the closure, contact Ryan Colloton at (406) 247-7306.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to protect this critical infrastructure.
