Three Montana Army National Guard members are facing misdemeanor trespassing charges after allegedly landing a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on private property in Sweet Grass County to collect elk antlers during a training flight from Billings to Helena on May 4, 2025. According to authorities, the guardsmen briefly touched down in a ranch pasture located in the foothills of the Crazy Mountains and retrieved two loose antlers and a skull with attached antlers, all estimated to be worth $300 to $400. The incident, which was witnessed and reported by the landowner, led to citations highlighting illegal entry onto posted private property and the unauthorized helicopter landing. Taking antlers from private land is illegal in Montana, while collection on state land requires a conservation license. The Montana National Guard is investigating the incident, and potential additional charges are under review, given the uncertainty around the legal ownership of the antlers. The National Guard has committed to taking appropriate disciplinary action if allegations are confirmed. One of the guardsmen’s attorneys emphasized their long-standing service and legal presumption of innocence. The items were eventually handed over to a state game warden, and officials have contacted the landowner regarding their return .
