Hooked On Fun–Take a Kid Fishing (No License Required)

Reel in the weekend right—free fishing, fresh bait, and hot food are all on the hook for Mother’s Day in Montana at Tongue River Marina!

Montana kids don’t need a screen to have a good time—they just need a rod, a lure, and a little patience. And this May and June, you have two chances to fish for free—no license, no excuses, just good old-fashioned fun.

Yep, Mother’s Day weekend and Father’s Day weekend are officially license-free in Montana. This is your moment regardless of whether you’re trying to introduce your littles to their first catch or just ditch some chores..

With Mother’s Day weekend this weekend, it’s a great time for anglers of all ages to hit the water. Tongue River Marina is plum stocked with live bait, including minnows, and will have its kitchen open Saturday and Sunday (closed Thursday and Friday). Extended weekend shop hours are Thursday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests are reminded that the shop does not manage camping or cabin reservations—those inquiries should be directed to Montana FWP.

First-Time Fishing with Kids?
There’s a simple guide for rookie parents and pro-level snack packers at fwp.mt.gov/fish/kids (seriously, check it out—it even makes bobbers sound cool).

So grab the tackle box, toss in some snacks, and make some memories. No experience or license required—just a willingness to untangle a few lines and cheer like crazy when someone catches their first fish!
