More than 150,000 geese push through Freezout Lake on Thursday, Friday

Earlier this week, bird counters noted on the Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area’s migration tracker that the migration numbers had likely peaked, but on Thursday and Friday, huge numbers of geese pushed through the area.

Bird counters estimate 92,000 geese were at the WMA on Thursday, with another 62,000 on Friday.

“Yes, 92K is the estimate today,” the migration tracker notes. “Strong late pulse of birds arriving to the WMA. Winter like weather in the area is likely allowing numbers to build on the area. Suspect numbers will not last long once weather clears in the next day or two.”

Data dating back to 2004 shows the migration usually peaks in late March.
