Hard work and persistence paid off earlier this week as I was able to put my Montana archery antelope tag on a beautiful buck here in the Musselshell River country.
After glassing over 60 antelope in a large alfalfa field at daylight and then formulating a plan for the stalk, I crawled along the steep banks of an irrigation ditch for nearly a mile to get myself into position for what would end up being a long wait.
For eight hours I laid under the shade of a single bush in the tall weeds in hopes of getting the best antelope buck in the field within bow range.
At 6 o’clock that evening, this Pope and Young buck finally made his way in and briefly gave up his job of chasing does to stand broadside at 61 yards.I came to my knees, drew back and released a single arrow which met its mark with deadly perfection.
The buck expired in less than a minute.The patience and persistence required to be a successful bowhunter is not for everyone, but as the saying goes “the tougher the journey, the sweeter the success.”
