River will be closed to floating & boating, shore access will remain open
ABSAROKEE – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has implemented an emergency closure on a portion of the Stillwater River near Absarokee due to road construction. The Stillwater River will be closed to floating and boating from Absaroka Fishing Access Site (FAS) to Jeffrey’s Landing FAS from Thursday, Aug. 1, at 5 a.m. to Thursday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m.
Absaroka FAS and Jeffrey’s Landing FAS will remain open. Users will be able to access the river via wading at these sites. Floaters will still be able to take watercraft out at Absaroka FAS and put watercraft in at Jeffrey’s Landing FAS to float the river downstream.
Heavy construction equipment will be operating within and adjacent to this stretch of the river during the closure, rendering the river unsafe for floating and boating. North Stillwater Road was significantly damaged in the historic 2022 flood event on the Stillwater River. Construction crews will re-channel the river in order to reroute the road back into the existing county road easement.
